Port Commissioners:

Terry Brazil – Lake Cushman

Karen Booth – Hoodsport

The Port of Hoodsport supports efforts to limit the spread of COVID-19 while maintaining essential operations.  The Port marina, dock and waterfront park facilities remain open to the public, all visitors are asked to maintain social distancing guidelines.  The port has implemented protocol to maintain the health safety, and wellbeing of port personnel, travelers, and community members.

The public restrooms are closed until further notice to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 to the public and port personnel.   To provide relief, two portable restrooms with hand washing stations have been provided for public use.  Overwhelming and excessive use of the Public Restrooms far exceeded the septic system design expectations which caused drain field failure and minimized public restroom usage prior to COVID-19.  The cost of the drain field repair along with ongoing supplies, maintenance, water and associated costs will affect the ports budget. The Port commission understands the communities need to have a public restroom, the Port along with County and community members are evaluating the situation to determine how best to proceed.

The Port’s surveillance system films the waterfront park, dock, parking area, shed, office and public restrooms, it tremendously helps with monitoring theft, dumping of household garbage and unsavory activities in and around the port properties.

The Hoodsport Trail Park and the Hoodsport Hills Disc Golf course is open to the Public. The Port of Hoodsport, in partnership with the Mason County Disc Golf Association has almost completed Phase II and plans to continue development of the professional 18-hole disc golf course at the upper Hoodsport Trail Park. Both courses value the natural aesthetics of the 80-acre park; attracting both professional & amateur disc golfers.  The Hoodsport Hills Disc Golf course crew developed Phase II, a “family friendly” beginner’s disc golf course on the level 20 acres situated on the South side of State Rt 119 parallel to the Lake Cushman Golf Course. The disc golfers have had fantastic success with the design.  Both the upper- and lower-disc golf courses were designed and developed with Volunteer labor from the disc golf community who will maintain the quality and safety of both courses throughout their life.  The upper course will minimize interface with existing hiking trails allowing hikers to also enjoy hiking the disc golf course and trail park.  The Port provides project materials such as the disc baskets, T pads, gravel, bark and portable restrooms.

“Overnight” moorage is available at the Port of Hoodsport’s Marina dock on a first come first served basis, no reservations, fees are $10. p/night and stays are limited to 24 hours at a time. Be sure to check the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife website for fishing & harvesting dates, times & warnings. (In 2015 The Washington State Dept of Health closed most of Hood Canal to recreational shellfish (oysters, clams, mussels) harvest.  This was due to the detection of a marine biotoxin, paralytic shellfish poison (PSP) which can be deadly and cannot be removed by cooking. Each and every time you harvest, Everyone needs to check the marine biotoxin hotline at 1-800-562-5632 or go to the website of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife at www.doh.wa.gov/shellfishsafety.htm for more information.)

The Port of Hoodsport is currently operating under the COVID-19 precaution until further notice.

The Port marina, dock and waterfront park remain open to the public, the Port commission requests that all visitors follow CDC guidelines, be responsible for their trash and respect physical distancing protocols to keep the health and safety of the public and port personnel on all Port of Hoodsport properties.

The public restrooms are closed until further notice to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 to the public and contracted port personnel.   Two portable restrooms with hand washing stations have been provided for the public.  When directed by the Federal, State and Local governments that there is no longer a COVID-19 threat, public restrooms will reopen on an intermittent schedule approved by Mason County along with portable restrooms to further accommodate the public during mandatory closures. Overwhelming & Excessive use of the Public Restrooms by local & out of area visitors far exceeded the design and capacity  expectations minimizing public restroom usage.  A public meeting will be held with the public, local business owners, county commission, department of ecology and tourism entities to discuss and determine the future direction of the public restrooms.

The Port of Hoodsport’s Marina, Dock and Waterfront Park have been increasingly busy throughout the Summer and Fall of 2016. The Public enjoys many activities along the Hood Canal, coming to Hoodsport for Beach coming, Shellfish, Boating, Kayaking and Fishing. In late Summer, the Mason County Health Department posted signs along the waterfront warning the public not to collect shellfish along the Hoodsport beaches due to sources of pollution that could have contaminated shellfish.

The Port of Hoodsport adopted a Resolution R15-01 at a Public Hearing prohibiting the discharge of ‘Fireworks’ by the general public on Port of Hoodsport properties. The Port of Hoodsport may grant permission to discharge fireworks on Port of Hoodsport property in support of future community events providing all safety measures and permitting are in place. The decision to deny permission to discharge fireworks by the general public on Port property was prompted in response to the Hoodsport Community Events Association’s decision NOT to have the 30th Annual Celebrate Hoodsport Fireworks event this year. In the past 29 years, the Hoodsport Community Events Association sponsored the annual fireworks display in the town of Hoodsport. The fireworks display was an organized event with an approved WSDOT traffic plan, a professional insured, licensed and bonded pyrotechnics company was hired and the event was permitted by the County Fire Marshall. The Port of Hoodsport was listed as Additionally Insured on a Certificate of Liability with permission for usage of the Port of Hoodsport’s public dock and marina from which to discharge fireworks. The Port of Hoodsport’s role in the annual event was to provide a Clean and Safe environment at the Ports Dock & Marina and as a duty to its Public and was responsible for Public and Traffic Safety.

The Port of Hoodsport’s Marina had floats replaced under the North end of the dock and slips this last winter. It was apparent that part of the dock was noticeably sagging, and upon closer inspection three support floats were no longer in place and had been carried away in a winter storm. In December of 2014 the Ports Waterfront Park hosted a Christmas tree structure that was erected over the Maple tree planter by the Port and decorated by the Kiwanis for the Christmas tree lighting event that was held on the first Sunday of December. Flower Baskets and flowers have been ordered for the Ports Waterfront Park, they will be planted and hung as soon as they arrive and weather permits.

The Public Restrooms continue to have high volume throughout the year.

The Hoodsport Trail Park has been open most of the winter due to mild weather and was closed only during stormy weather. The parking area at the Trail Park is being expanded to accommodate increased hiking activity. New Trail head signs are being constructed and will be installed by summer of 2015.

The Port of Hoodsport will be holding a public hearing to discuss future plans for the Hoodsport Trail Park .

The date and time of the Public meeting is expected to be announced sometime in May or June 2015 as soon as details are worked out.

The Port Commission will have a full presentation and will welcome discussion and input from the Public addressing thoughts, questions and concerns about the proposed plans.
