Old Business

Hoodsport Vision

Commissioner Benavente stated that, at the last meeting, the Port Commission was encouraged to move forward with the vision. Representatives from Art Anderson Associates have been asked to attend the 9:30 a.m. meeting this morning to give us their feedback on what we’ve identified as the vision for Hoodsport. Anderson Associates did the Bremerton marina project.

Commissioner Benavente met yesterday with Foster and Williams, the architects for Mike’s new store. He gave them copies of our Comprehensive Plan and pictures of what the dock area could look like, and asked if they could come up with a proposal to blend in with Mike’s drawings. We’re looking at the open space between the existing dock and Dr. Door’s property to build out a pier something on the lines of Seattle’s Pier 59.

Mike Purvis suggested that we contact Anthony’s and/or other restaurants to see if they would consider putting a restaurant on the pier. The Port of Olympia is putting in a small boat-up grill on their pier. Commissioner Benavente cautioned that it would constitute a permanent structure over water, which might be a problem. There could also be septic issues. The Port is still looking at the possibility of acquiring the Marina Café property at some point in the future.

Commissioner Benavente said that Foster and Williams are aware that Mike is granting to the Port and easement for a drain field in order to allow us to put in public restrooms. Since it would be on a state highway, we may be able to get DOT money for the project.

Pumpout

The pumpout is moving forward. The application has been submitted and we’re waiting to hear back on that. We have an engineer who is ready to do the design for less than $2,000, which is the limit that the grant will pay.

Mr. Fabig asked where we are on Foothills Park. Commissioner Benavente responded that the County Parks Department has completed their master plan, which includes a community center on a section of the Foothills property. The plan is going to the county commissioners next week for approval. The county would give us a long-term lease on the property so we could get grants to build a community center. Much of the Foothills property will remain in its natural state, with the exception of some trails. The Hoodsport trail is being made available and the Port has sent a letter expressing interest in taking it over.

Mike reported that his project is moving along. He had a consultant conduct a community survey, after which it became clear that there is a need for the store. Mike believes that the store will help to change our community. Cindy asked if the store will be independent or part of a chain. Mike responded that they will remain independent. He added that, except for ad items, their pricing would be the same as Safeway. There is an issue with zoning and that may change for all of Hoodsport. The Port will write a letter supporting the new store.

Commissioner Benavente reminded everyone that there will be a Waste Water meeting tonight at the Fire Hall at 7:00 p.m.

Having no further business, the meeting adjourned at 9:05 a.m.
